How to Reinstall a VPS Instance (Linux/Windows)

Usually, a VPS needs to be reinstalled from a management interface. It’s easy to reinstall a VPS from the SolVPS Panel:

  • Log in to the VPS Panel at: https://panel.solvps.com/
  • Select your VPS from the list.
  • Click the Reinstall button.
  • Select an Operating System from the list.

There are several options available for reinstalling a VPS. Choose from CentOS VPS, Ubuntu VPS, FreeBSD VPS, Debian VPS, Gentoo VPS, Arch Linux, Slackware, and other VPS templates. Most are available in 64-bit and 32-bit versions.

You can ping the VPS throughout the reinstallation process, to monitor reinstall progress. When ping resumes with regular responses, the VPS should become available to SSH connections within a short time.

How to Reboot a Linux VPS (CentOS, Ubuntu)

If you only need to reboot the operating system of your Linux VPS, it can usually be accomplished with the shutdown command. Try “shutdown -r now” to reboot your VPS.

If you have a VPS with us, or you have access to your VPS management panel, you can issue a full hardware reboot. This kind of reboot will reset the VPS from the hypervisor level, and is sometimes required to make VPS upgrades or downgrades.

  • Log in to the VPS Panel at: https://panel.solvps.com/
  • Select your VPS from the list.
  • Click the Reboot button to initiate a reboot.

Check out how to ping your VPS to monitor the VPS’s network throughout the reboot process, and receive a signal when it is online and available again.

How to Transfer Files to VPS with SFTP (Windows,OS X,Linux)

Another way to connect to a Linux VPS is with SFTP, or FTP-over-SSH, not to be confused with FTPS. Because SFTP makes use of a graphical interface for viewing folders and folder trees, it is well-suited to transferring files to and from Linux VPS servers, without the need to install additional software like FTP. Executing commands on the system does still require the use of a shell, however. Some FTP/SFTP programs have shell terminals built-in as a “Launch Shell” utility.

You can use this method with most FTP client applications, including:

  • FileZilla
  • SmartFTP
  • Transmit (OS X)
  • Cyberduck
  • WinSCP (our favorite)

Using your FTP client of choice, select SFTP as the connection type, and ensure the Port is set to 22.

The remaining information is the same as above: IP address, username, password.

You should now see the root folder of your VPS appear, just like when connecting via FTP. When connecting to a VPS or dedicated server with SFTP, however, you will have access to the entire server. Be very careful when transferring and editing files with SFTP!

Additional Capacity Added for USA VPS Deployments in New York City

Today we are very excited to announce that our USA VPS hosting infrastructure has been expanded and improved in New York City.

The upgrades were necessary after strong demand for the New York VPS location throughout June and into July. To meet demand of incoming orders, we have deployed several additional compute nodes, adding additional CPU and RAM capacity to our network, as well as expanded storage capacity.

Additionally, we are pleased to announce that our VM deployment system now accommodates larger and more advanced VPS configurations. Linux VPS and Windows VPS instances can be built with resources up to these maximums:

  • Up to 24 GB RAM (Memory) per VM
  • Up to 800 GB Storage (RAID10 SSD) per VM
  • Up to 16 CPU Cores per VM

We have made these changes in a continued effort to provide the best possible service for advanced VPS hosting requirements.

Try out a custom configuration, starting at $5 for Linux VPS instances and $8 for Windows VPS instances:

We have made it extremely easy to deploy a new VM: simply choose your application’s required resources, check the total price per month, and deploy instantly whenever needed.

“Remote desktop connection can’t connect to the remote computer” – RDP Connection with Windows

You may receive an error like the following when connecting to your Windows VPS or other Windows server with RDP:

This error usually indicates that the Windows VPS is offline. If the VPS is newly deployed, wait 3-5 minutes and try again. If you had previously connected to the VPS, wait and try again, as the error may be related to a temporary network issue.

If you cannot connect after 3-5 minutes, try to ping your VPS. If the ping is returned as “unreachable” or “timed out”, please contact support! We will ensure that the VPS is online, and assist you with connecting to remote desktop.

If the ping is returned successfully, there is most likely a local security setting on your PC that is preventing the connection. Try the following solutions:

  • Allow Remote Desktop (RDP) connections through Windows Firewall explicitly, or disable Windows Firewall temporarily.
  • Open Remote Desktop Connection, click “Show Options“, and check the Security tab. Allow the most permissive settings.

How soon are new VPS instances setup?

We’ve put a lot of work into our platform to make new VPS deployments as smooth an user-friendly as possible.

In most cases, VPS instances are deployed within 1 minute, and become available within 2 to 3 minutes (Windows takes this long to complete initial setup; Linux usually boots up instantaneously).

If your service is not deployed immediately, please contact us!

How to Connect to Windows VPS with RDP (Windows 7)

Connecting to a remote Windows server or Windows VPS from your Windows 7 PC is easy with Microsoft’s own Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) program. It is included with most versions of Windows.

How to Connect

1. To launch RDC, open the Start menu of your computer and search for “Remote Desktop Connection“. (If you can’t find it, run Start > Run > mstsc.exe). Enter your VPS or remote Windows Server details as follows:

2. In the “Computer” field, enter your server’s public IP address. This address can be found by selecting your service from the Dashboard in the Secure Client Panel.

Click Connect

You may see a message like the following. This happens because the security certificate used by your VPS is self-generated and self-signed. It’s OK to connect because you know it’s your own server, so feel free to select “Don’t ask me again.”

Click Connect.

3. RDC will prompt you for the remote system’s username and password (if the server is offline or inaccessible, you will receive an error message).

You can find the username and password in the Secure Client Panel by selecting your Windows VPS from the Dashboard.

Click OK.

You should now be connected to your server’s desktop.

How to SSH Connect to Linux VPS with Windows, Mac, Linux

The primary way to connect to your Linux VPS is via command line, with the use of a SSH client. To connect to your VPS with SSH (command line), you will require one of the following programs:

  • Putty, available for all versions of WindowsPutty Downloads (Hosted by SolVPS)
  • WinSCP, available for all versions of WindowsWinSCP Downloads (Hosted by SolVPS)
  • Terminal.app, packaged with all versions of Mac OS X.
  • Your favorite shell/terminal application for Linux.

After launching Putty, WinSCP, or opening your shell terminal, the program will require VPS login credentials:

  • IP Address / Host: [Supplied in your “New Server Information” email, and also available in Manage Products/Services.]
  • User Name: root
  • Password: [Supplied in your “New Server Information” email.]
  • SSH Port: 22

On OS X and Linux, this information is entered into the command line using the ssh command in the following format, where “x.x.x.x” is the server’s IP address and “22” is the SSH port number: ssh root@x.x.x.x -p 22 You can now enter commands at the command line, according to your needs. Have fun!
